On August 6 and 9, 1945, the US dropped two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki respectively, killing between 129,000 – 226,000 people by the end of the year. Many suffer from debilitating diseases and stigmatization to this day. As of 2017, the average age of hibakusha – or atomic bomb survivors – is 80.86. Soon, we will no longer be able to hear first hand accounts of this human atrocity.
